President's Message
January 23, 2012
Welcome Minnesota Winter!
For those of you unable to attend, you should know that the meeting at the Cowles Center was fantastic. It was a nice change of pace and a great story about sticking to a vision and overcoming obstacles. I barely remember the Big move when the Shubert theatre was moved from block E to block D. It should have been featured on some sort of reality TV series. After 10 years, the construction of the Cowles Center is complete, nearly funded, and producing great shows.
Our next monthly meeting will be held on February 9th back at JAX Café, our normal spot. The speaker will be Brandon Semilof, Director - StoneCastle Partners, LLC. Mr. Semilof will deliver a presentation on Cash Management in Today's Marketplace with a specific discussion on the current state of cash management, insights on the challenges being faced by treasurers and address the expanding cash management options now being utilized by Treasurers. Our luncheon menu is lasagna and Jax's fabulous turtle cheesecake. Register here!
Also, don’t forget that we are off-site again in March at the Minneapolis Federal Reserve. Toby Madden/Regional Economist from the Fed will be the main speaker. The topic will be “2012 Economic Regional Update” and Claudia Swendseid/SVP will introduce Toby and answer questions. The outlook is based on statistical model forecasts and survey results. The main forecast is for employment, unemployment, and personal income. Toby will also dive deeper into the agriculture, manufacturing and home building sectors. We will have a buffet lunch and attendance will be limited to 100. Registration will open by February 1st for the March 8th meeting.
The annual conference is only 3 months away! We have had great responses so far for interested Exhibitors/Sponsors, but we could always use more. Please contact Quay Hayden or Susan Kubis, our 2012 conference co-chairs, if you have any ideas or questions about the annual conference.
The breakfast and lunch speakers are secured and we are very excited. Breakfast - We started a general breakfast session 3 years ago, and it has grown in popularity. Please plan on arriving a little early, grabbing your breakfast, and heading into the main ballroom by 7:30 AM. We thank BMO Harris Bank for their generous commitment to provide full financial sponsorship for the breakfast. This year, our speaker for the breakfast session is Dr. Stephen Wilbers. He is a writing consultant, author, and syndicated columnist. You can find his regular columns in the StarTribune’s business section. He will present “Techniques for Excellent Business Writing.” He is on the faculty of the University of MN, one of our partner institutions. Dr. Wilbers has requested we gather writing samples from our member base. Those samples will be used during his presentation to show how good writing can be made even better. If you are interested in having your business writing reviewed, please send a paragraph or two to the chair of our keynote speaker committee, Tom Colling. Please edit your sample to ensure confidentiality and anonymity. Luncheon - Our keynote speaker is Ross Shafer, a six-time Emmy Award winning comedian, writer, and TV show host. He has produced numerous training films and business books and even a best-selling comedy cookbook entitled “Cook Like A Stud - 38 recipes men can prepare in the garage with their own tools.” He will be speaking on motivation and leadership. Check out our MNAFP's special web page here with full details on these key speakers.
The annual conference is a great learning experience for all, but it is also very beneficial in fulfilling continuing education credits for our CTP’s. If you are interested in learning more about the CTP, click here. Hear from your finance peers on why the CTP is a requirement for the treasury and finance profession by attending a complimentary webinar on February 15. Learn how earning the CTP can boost your career effectiveness and gain insight into exam preparation.
